Whitethorn Studios are a creative and welcoming workspace for the amateur and professional artist. The light-filled and spacious studios are well-equipped with views across the surrounding countryside to the nearby Loughcrew Hills in Oldcastle which contain 5,000 year old rock carvings termed ‘The greatest open art gallery in Europe’.
The Studios are in the converted outbuildings of the former Garryross School which is now the home of artist Michelle Boyle and her family. The buildings have been converted in stages to suit the needs of classes/workshops and also the of the artists own practice in her adjoining studio. An idea for the future is to convert an elevated room in the school water tower to an intimate studio space, accessed by winding stair… As the studios evolve so also does the programme of classes and workshops delivered by Michelle and visiting artists.
Classes/workshops are usually kept small (12 max) so as to allow for individual attention to participants needs. The small numbers and long sessions have from experience been shown to suit the complete beginner and also the accomplished painter, as learning is made through looking and exchanging experiences in a supportive working environment. The studios are located 15 mins from the picturesque towns of Virginia (Cavan) and Oldcastle (Meath) and 90 mins via M3 form Dublin. Visiting art groups can be accommodated locally at reduced rates.
