The emphasis in the classes at Whitethorn Studios is for participants to develop their artistic practice in two ways- as creator and as audience. Firstly, as creator, by exploring painting materials and techniques involved in the practical process of making art. Secondly, as audience, by learning to look at art and familiarise themselves with artists and art movements across time. This is done through gallery visits arranged by the Studios and availing of the studio library of art books.
‘I really believe that human beings can be taught to love what they do not love already and that the privileged moment exists already for all of us if we let itﾉ What has changed is my way of seeing. I am learning to look at pictures. What has changed is my capacity of feeling. Art opens the heart.’ – Jeanette Winterson (Art Objects)
